Timothy Gowers is a mathematician. He was an undergraduate at Cambridge University, and also did a PhD there under the supervision of Béla Bollobás. This was followed by a research fellowship at Trinity College and a lectureship at University College London. In 1995 he returned to Cambridge where he has worked in various capacities ever since. In 2020 he became a professor at the Collège de France, retaining a part-time position at Cambridge. For his mathematical research he has received several prizes, including a Fields Medal in 1998. He is also the author of Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction and the main editor of The Princeton Companion to Mathematics. In 2012 he was knighted for services to mathematics.
